Tulipa 'Little Princess'

Botanical tulip cultivar of the Liliaceae family, linked to the Tulipa humilis group. Its precise hybrid origin is not documented with certainty in the sources consulted, but it belongs to the series of small star-flowered tulips selected for rock gardens and pot cultivation.

Low and slender growth for the group, reaching 15 to 20 cm in height. The leaves are narrow, medium green, upright, more reminiscent of linear tulip leaves than the broad leaves of the kaufmanniana group. The bulb gradually multiplies in clumps.

The buds, brick-red to dull salmon-pink on the outside, open into large stars with six very widely spaced pointed tepals, in a warm and bright vermilion-orange. The central spot is tricolored, bright yellow in the inner ring, then smoky dark brown, strongly contrasting with the orange background of the tepals. The anthers are dark brown-black to golden depending on the stage. This dark center encircled by yellow in a very spread-out orange cup in the sun is the most striking feature of this cultivar.

In cultivation, flowering extends from April to early May, late in the season for botanical tulips.

It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and respected summer drought to ensure the bulb's longevity. Suitable for rock gardens, pots, and spring compositions with a natural character.
