Stemless perennial of the Asteraceae family. It is probably a North American species from the Rockies, collected or distributed under this provenance reference in the absence of complete specific identification.
The plant forms a low and spreading rosette, not exceeding 4 to 6 cm in height. The leaves are spatulate to linear, medium green, densely pubescent, giving them a very characteristic grayish and velvety appearance. The capitula, large and sessile, emerge directly from the rosette; the ligules are pure white, numerous and well developed, framing a very distinct bright golden yellow and convex central disc.
In its supposed natural habitat, the flowering of the Townsendia of the Rockies extends from March to June depending on the altitude. In cultivation, it blooms early in the spring.
Like all Townsendia, it requires perfect drainage, a mineral and rocky substrate, and full sun exposure. Protection against winter moisture is essential. Cultivation in an alpine trough or pot is often recommended in climates with rainy winters.
