Teucrium subspinosum

Small thorny shrub of the Lamiaceae family, endemic to the Balearic Islands, where it is strictly limited to Majorca and nearby islets. It grows on open garrigues, coastal cliffs, and dry rocky slopes on limestone, from sea level to modest altitudes.

It forms a dense and intricate cushion, 12 to 20 cm in height, with rigid, highly branched stems ending in sharp, well-visible spines, a quite singular characteristic in the genus Teucrium. The entire plant is covered with a dense silvery-white tomentum, giving it, outside of flowering, the appearance of a mineral and almost sculptural cushion against the rock.

The leaves are very small, linear to narrowly oblong, quickly deciduous on older branches. The flowers, bright pink to lilac pink, are small but numerous, scattered over the entire bush at flowering time, creating a colorful seeding against the silvery background of the stems.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from May to July. In cultivation, it generally occurs in May-June.

Sought after by rock garden enthusiasts for the rarity of its thorny silvery cushion habit, without equivalent in the genus, it requires full sun and good drainage.
