Perennial of the Asteraceae family, the type species is native to the Middle East and southeastern Europe, where it occupies rocky slopes and dry limestone terrain in full light. 'Jackpot' is a particularly floriferous horticultural selection, whose behavior in cultivation amply justifies the name.
The plant forms a spreading bushy clump, reaching 40 to 60 cm in height. The foliage is medium green, finely pinnate and aromatic. At flowering time, it almost entirely disappears under a multitude of small daisies with white ligules and bright yellow centers, borne on branched stems in very dense corymbs. The mass effect is striking, the plant literally covering itself with flowers to the point of forming a white dome punctuated with yellow.
In its natural habitat, the species blooms from June to July. In cultivation, 'Jackpot' blooms generously over the same period, and moderate pruning after flowering can encourage a slight resurgence.
It requires full sun and well-drained soil, dry to moderately fresh, poor to ordinary. Its resistance to summer drought makes it a plant suited to Mediterranean gardens, spacious rockeries, and sunny borders, where it readily reseeds itself from year to year.
