Phedimus floriferum 'Weihenstephaner Gold'

syn. Sedum floriferum 'Weihenstephaner Gold'

Perennial from the Crassulaceae family, selected from the type species originating from Northern China and Manchuria. This cultivar was obtained at the Weihenstephan horticultural station in Bavaria, from which it takes its name, and has established itself as one of the most reliable ground-covering sedums with abundant flowering.

The plant forms a dense and spreading carpet, 10 to 15 cm in height, with creeping and branched stems bearing flattened, spatulate leaves, a strong green, slightly toothed at the top, with a fleshy texture but less thick than that of glaucous sedums. At the end of the season and in sunny conditions, the stems and the underside of the leaves take on noticeable reddish to bronzed hues.

The flowers are star-shaped, bright yellow to intense golden yellow, borne in tight corymbs that literally cover the foliage at the time of flowering. The reddish stamens in the center of each flower create a particularly lively warm contrast. In cultivation, flowering occurs from June to July, and the transition between orange buds and fully open golden yellow flowers gives the plant a very characteristic multicolored appearance, clearly visible on plants in bloom.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August depending on conditions. In cultivation under our climates, it is mainly concentrated in June-July.

Very hardy and easy, this cultivar tolerates ordinary to poor, well-drained soils, in full sun or light partial shade. It withstands periods of moderate drought and is suitable for rock gardens as well as extensive green roofs, embankments, and borders. Its vigor and generous flowering make it a reliable ground cover for large areas.
