Evergreen perennial of the Saxifragaceae family, this cultivar belongs to the hybrid group × eudoxiana, resulting from the cross between Saxifraga ferdinandi-coburgii, native to the Balkans and Northern Greece, and Saxifraga sancta, a species from Turkey and the Caucasus. Both parents are Kabschia saxifrages with yellow flowers from the Porphyrion section, and their descendants have inherited their vigor and floral generosity. 'Gold Dust' is distinguished from the neighboring cultivar 'Haagii' by a slightly more compact habit, although the two are very close.
The plant forms dense, rapidly spreading mats, composed of small rosettes with narrow, medium green to slightly glaucous leaves, slightly spiny at the top. The whole has a finely textured appearance that remains pleasant to observe outside of flowering.
In spring, short flowering stems about 5 to 7 cm long bear compact cymes of bright, pure yellow flowers, with well-rounded petals. In cultivation, flowering generally occurs from March to April. The color is bright and luminous, without any muted golden hue: a pure yellow that illuminates the rock garden from the first weeks of the season.
Robust and accommodating for a Kabschia hybrid, 'Gold Dust' is grown in a well-drained rock garden, in full sun or very slightly shaded in summer. It withstands outdoor conditions better than many other representatives of the section, while appreciating a poor and mineral substrate, preferably calcareous, without stagnant winter moisture.
