Saxifraga sp

Saxifraga sp in bloom in an alpine meadow habitat
Saxifraga sp

Perennial of the Saxifragaceae family. It forms a very compact and low cushion, a few centimeters high, composed of small rosettes with short, rigid, and densely interlocked leaves. An immediately striking feature is the strong reddish-brown coloration at the base of the leaves and old rosettes, giving the entire cushion a bicolored hue, bright green at the tips and dark at the core. This aspect, both mineral and living, is characteristic of high-altitude saxifrages with very slow growth.

The flowers are white, with five rounded petals, and a well-marked yellow center, borne very close to the cushion on very short stems.

The section to which it belongs remains difficult to specify without additional data. The habit, foliage texture, and coloration evoke saxifrages from the Porphyrion section or some representatives of the Saxifraga section with very tight rosettes.

In cultivation, this type of saxifrage requires a very well-drained mineral substrate, in full light, without stagnant moisture, and is perfectly suited to a well-tended rock garden or trough culture.
