Saxifraga sancta

Saxifraga sancta from Rila in bloom in the rocky scree of the Rila massif in Bulgaria
Saxifraga sancta from Rila (Bulgaria) -DA-

Perennial of the Saxifragaceae family, belonging to the Gymnopera section. The species is native to northern Greece and Bulgaria, where it grows in rock crevices and mountain rocky scree. The mention "from Rila" indicates an origin from the Rila massif in Bulgaria, one of the highest massifs in the Balkans, where the species is found on siliceous or mixed substrate at altitudes between approximately 1,800 and 2,500 meters.

It forms a dense and rounded cushion, well-structured, composed of numerous tight rosettes with lanceolate to linear, mucronate leaves, of a bright and shiny green, without notable pubescence. The visible cushion presents a particularly clear architecture, each rosette well individualized giving the whole an almost geometric aspect.

The flowers are bright yellow, borne on short stems above the foliage, in small, sparsely populated cymes. Their clear color contrasts pleasantly with the bright green of the rosettes.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from May to July depending on the altitude. In cultivation, it generally blooms in April-May.

It is cultivated in full light in a well-drained mineral substrate, poor to moderately rich, tolerates both neutral and slightly acidic substrates. Relatively accommodating in this group, it withstands winter humidity better than some of its close relatives, while benefiting from good exposure and careful drainage.
