Saxifraga 'Pearl rose'

Perennial hybrid of the Saxifragaceae family, 'Pearl Rose' is associated with the Saxifraga x anglica group, which includes hybrids from the Porphyrion section, the alpine-origin Kabschia saxifrages.

The plant forms a very compact cushion, composed of dense rosettes with short, fleshy, glandular leaves, of a characteristic grayish-green. The photograph shows the rosettes at the beginning of the season, with their floral buds still closed, creamy white to pale yellow, tightly packed in the heart of each rosette — a particularly decorative stage that precedes the opening of the flowers.

The open flowers are pink, with rounded petals, borne on very short peduncles at the level of the cushion. In cultivation, flowering occurs in spring, in March-April depending on exposure and climate.

Like all Kabschia, 'Pearl Rose' requires perfect drainage and good air circulation. It is cultivated in rock gardens, crevices, or alpine troughs, sheltered from prolonged winter rains. The precise origins of the cultivar and its breeder remain unverified to date in the specialized sources consulted.
