Primula 'Purpurkissen'

The name of this cultivar, which means "purple cushion" in German, accurately describes its habit and color. A hybrid from the Pruhoniciana group, it is part of the long tradition of selecting small-flowered spring primroses in Central Europe, although the exact date and place of its origin cannot be established with certainty.

The plant forms a dense, spreading rosette, remaining very low, 8 to 10 cm in height when in bloom. The leaves are oval, medium to bright green, slightly blistered and with a crenate edge, borne on conspicuous reddish petioles that add a colorful note even when not in bloom. The flowers, borne individually on short peduncles, are a deep, velvety crimson-purple, quite dark, with a small white eye surrounded by bright yellow; this bright center stands out sharply against the dark background of the petals, giving each flower a very distinct character.

In cultivation, flowering occurs from March to April. Like the entire group, 'Purpurkissen' appreciates cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in semi-shade or moderate exposure. Hardy and vigorous, it is suitable for rock gardens, woodland borders, and low-height spring compositions.
