Primula 'Fireflies'

Hybrid perennial of the Primula × juliana group, 'Fireflies' belongs to those dark red-dominated cultivars that are among the most sought after by rock garden and spring primrose enthusiasts. Its precise horticultural origin is not clearly documented, but it is part of the long tradition of deep-toned julianae selection developed notably by specialized British and American nurseries.

The plant forms a compact and vigorous clump 10 to 15 cm in height. The foliage is particularly remarkable, with blistered oval leaves taking on deep green hues strongly tinged with purple and burgundy at the time of flowering, perfectly matching the flowers. The peduncles themselves are colored reddish-brown. The flowers, borne individually at the end of short upright peduncles, are a deep crimson red to blood red, with a bright yellow eye edged with orange that captures the light with striking intensity, precisely evoking small embers in the darkness, which the English name 'Fireflies' aptly conveys. Under certain lighting, the petals reveal a slight satin aspect.

In cultivation, flowering extends from February to April depending on the climate. A fresh, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in partial shade or under filtered light, suits it perfectly. Dividing the clumps every two to three years is recommended to maintain the plant's vigor.
