Primula x pubescens 'Timpany snow'

Horticultural cultivar of the Primula x pubescens group, an alpine-origin hybrid resulting from the cross between Primula auricula and Primula hirsuta, family Primulaceae. The name refers to Timpany Nurseries, in Northern Ireland, founded and managed by Susan Tindall, whose passion and expertise in selecting alpine and rock garden plants have left a lasting mark on the rock gardening world.

'Timpany Snow' is a perennial forming a spread-out and well-structured rosette, reaching 10 to 15 cm in height when in bloom. The leaves are large, fleshy, dark green with a slight grayish tint, with a matte surface and wavy margin, giving the plant a notable architectural presence even when not in bloom.

The flowers are white to very pale cream white, slightly tinged with ivory at the center, with a discreet yellow-green eye. The petals, broad and slightly wavy, are arranged in an open and generous corolla, almost semi-double judging by their number and overlap. The spring bloom occurs in cultivation in April-May. The purity of the white hue, rare in the Primula x pubescens group where warm and dark tones dominate, is the most distinctive feature of this cultivar.

Growing in a well-drained rock garden or in a pot under cold shelter is perfectly suited, in a substrate rich in granules, protected from prolonged winter moisture. A semi-shaded location preserves the freshness of the floral hue.
