Primula 'Easter Bonnet'

Double-flowered cultivar from the selection of acaulescent primroses, 'Easter Bonnet' is one of the most vigorous and floriferous double pinks among the available cultivars. Its precise origin is not documented with certainty in the consulted sources.

The rosette is ample and well-developed, composed of oval to elliptical, bright green leaves, distinctly embossed and slightly rough, borne on relatively long petioles that give the plant an open and spreading habit. It reaches 12 to 18 cm in height at full bloom. The double flowers are numerous, well-rounded, a deep magenta pink to violet pink, each scalloped petal bordered with a thin white edge that runs regularly around the perimeter and accentuates the definition of each row of petals. The buds open progressively into tight rosettes reminiscent of small miniature roses.

This cultivar is distinguished by its unusual floriferousness for a double, with flowers succeeding over a prolonged period. In cultivation, flowering occurs from March to April. Propagation by division after flowering remains the most reliable method to faithfully preserve the characteristics of the cultivar. It requires a cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in semi-shade, without prolonged summer drought.
