Double-flowered cultivar resulting from the selection of acaulescent primroses, 'Blue Sapphire' belongs to a group of particularly sought-after blue doubles, known for being delicate to maintain in cultivation.
The plant forms a compact rosette of medium green, oval to elliptical leaves, wrinkled and slightly rough to the touch, characteristic of acaulescent primroses. It remains low, 10 to 15 cm in height when in bloom. The double flowers, very full and tight, are borne directly from the rosette on short peduncles. Their color ranges from blue-violet to nuanced lavender blue, with changing reflections depending on the light, from slate blue to pale mauve at the petal edges. Each petal is finely scalloped and marked with a very thin silvery white border running along the edge, adding extra delicacy to the ensemble already heavily laden with petals.
In cultivation, flowering occurs from March to April. Propagation by division after flowering remains the most reliable method to faithfully preserve the characteristics of the cultivar. It requires cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in partial shade, and does not tolerate drought or prolonged summer heat. Its longevity in cultivation demands regular attention.
