Linum sp

Linum sp

photographed in Spain

Family Linaceae. This species, photographed in Spain, has not yet been determined with certainty.

The habit is low, with few and slender stems, bearing large flowers relative to the whole plant. The flowers have five broad, rounded petals, of a fairly deep bluish-purple, with darker veins radiating from a white to pale yellow center. The shade, slightly more purplish than that of Linum perenne, and the significant size of the flowers relative to the plant's habit are notable distinguishing features.

Several Iberian species with blue flowers could match this profile, including Linum narbonense, Linum alpinum subsp. pyrenaicum, or an Iberian endemic species not yet identified in these photos. Precise determination would require examination of the foliage, sepals, and capsules.

In cultivation, this plant is treated like other perennial blue-flowered flax: full sun, well-drained soil, mineral or calcareous substrate, without excess winter moisture.
