Helianthemum 'Red Dragon' in bloom in a sunny garden
Helianthemum 'Red Dragon'

Cultivar of perennial sub-shrub from the Cistaceae family, resulting from horticultural hybridizations from species and varieties of the genus Helianthemum. Its name clearly evokes the color of its flowers, one of the most vivid and intense reds that can be found in this group.

The clump is compact and bushy, 20 to 30 cm in height, well-branched from the base. The foliage consists of small oval to elliptical leaves, medium green, slightly tomentose, forming a dense cushion that highlights the brilliance of the flowers.

These are a bright and deep red, with five petals slightly crumpled like tissue paper, centered with a cluster of bright yellow stamens that sharply contrast with the red of the petals. Up close, the velvety texture of the petals and the clarity of the yellow heart give each flower a remarkable presence. The flowering is abundant and follows quickly despite the brevity of each individual flower.

In cultivation, the flowering extends from May to July, with a possible partial resurgence after light trimming.

It requires well-drained soil, in full sun, and tolerates poor and stony substrates well. Perfectly hardy, it integrates brilliantly into sunny rock gardens, where its sustained red color creates striking contrasts with the yellow or pink forms of the genus.
