Helianthemum nummularium ssp pyrenaicum

Variety of perennial sub-shrub from the Cistaceae family, endemic to the Pyrenees, where it occupies sunny limestone grasslands, rocky slopes, and edges of high-altitude garrigues, generally between 800 and 2,000 meters. It differs from the type species by the color of its flowers, bright pink to deep pink, while the typical form bears yellow flowers.

The clump is bushy and widely spread, 20 to 40 cm in height, with slender and branched stems, slightly tomentose. The foliage, composed of small lanceolate to oval leaves, is grayish-green, paler on the underside, giving the whole a soft hue that particularly highlights the color of the flowers.

The flowers, a clear pink with a bright orange center marked with yellow stamens, are borne in very generous loose clusters. The contrast between the pink petals and the orange-yellow heart is one of the most charming features of this variety. As with all helianthemums, each flower opens for only one day, but their succession is so rapid that the flowering appears continuous.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August. In cultivation, it occurs from May to July.

It requires well-drained soil, preferably limestone, in full sun. Hardy and undemanding, it is particularly at ease in natural-style rockeries or in association with other dry grassland plants of the Pyrenees.
