Helichrysum milfordiae

Helichrysum milfordiae is a dwarf perennial of the Asteraceae family, native to the mountains of Lesotho and the highlands of the Drakensberg in South Africa, where it grows on rocks and exposed scree, between 2,800 and 3,400 meters in altitude. It is one of the most sought-after alpine species of the genus.

It forms a dense, very compact cushion that spreads slowly, hardly exceeding 5 cm in height. The foliage consists of small rosettes pressed tightly against each other, with spatulate leaves of a silvery green-gray, covered with a fine silky tomentum that gives them a particularly appealing downy and pearly appearance. This regular cushion, almost mineral in its density, is already remarkable without flowers.

The solitary capitula, borne flush with the cushion on very short stems, are of striking beauty: the scarious bracts open in a star shape, initially tinged with pink-purple at their tips, then gradually lightening to pure white at full anthesis, around a bright yellow center. In its natural habitat, flowering extends from November to January. In cultivation under our latitudes, it generally occurs from May to July.

Its cultivation is reputed to be difficult, and even experienced collectors lose it some winters. The main enemy is not the cold but stagnant humidity combined with lack of ventilation: in the Drakensberg, winters are cold but dry and sunny. It requires a very mineral substrate, composed mainly of gravel or pumice with very little organic matter, perfect drainage at the bottom of the pot, and constant air circulation around the cushion. The collar should never remain in contact with a damp substrate; many specialists place the plant on a bed of gravel on the surface. Watering is very reduced in summer and practically suspended in winter. Cultivation in a cold alpine greenhouse, very airy and bright all year round, with bottom watering during the growing season, is the most reliable solution.
