Helianthemum alpestre

Sub-shrub of the Cistaceae family, present in the mountains of central and southern Europe, from the Alps to the Apennines and the Carpathians, where it colonizes rocky lawns, calcareous screes, and exposed slabs between 1,500 and 2,800 meters in altitude.

It forms dense and compact cushions, strictly applied to the substrate, hardly exceeding 5 to 10 cm in height for a progressive spread of 20 to 40 cm. The small oval leaves, opposite, dark green on the upper side and significantly paler and tomentose underneath, are bordered by a well-visible whitish edge that gives them a finely hemmed appearance, a characteristic observable outside of flowering.

In bloom, the cushion literally disappears under a blanket of small bright yellow flowers with five delicate petals, borne on short upright stems adorned with silky, grayish buds. The effect is that of a luminous, dense, and homogeneous carpet.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August depending on the altitude. In cultivation, it blooms from May to July.

It requires very well-drained soil, poor, preferably calcareous, and full sun exposure. It does not tolerate stagnant winter moisture. Fully hardy, it is one of the best-adapted helianthemums for rigorous alpine rock gardens.
