Selected cultivar from the Balkan species Geranium subcaulescens, 'Splendens' is distinctly different due to the color of its flowers. Where the type species displays an intense and deep magenta, 'Splendens' offers a brighter vivid pink to pink-carmine, its petals traversed by dark converging veins and marked with a central black eye surrounded by a whitish area that enhances the contrast. This pale area around the eye is one of the most reliable characteristics to distinguish this cultivar from the type species.
Like the species, it forms a low and spreading cushion of 10 to 15 cm, with dark gray-green dissected leaves, evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on the climate.
Its flowering in cultivation extends from May to July, sometimes beyond.
A cultivar that has become rare in commerce where it is very frequently confused with the type species, or even replaced by it. It is cultivated in full sun, in well-drained soil, poor to moderately fertile, and is perfectly suited to rock gardens and gravel gardens.
