Geranium asphodeloides

Geranium asphodeloides in bloom in a forest clearing of the Balkans
Geranium asphodeloides

Perennial of the Geraniaceae family, Geranium asphodeloides is native to the eastern Mediterranean basin, from the Balkans to Turkey and the Caucasus, where it grows in forest clearings, wooded edges, and shaded to semi-shaded rocky slopes, between approximately 500 and 1800 meters.

It forms loose and spreading clumps, 20 to 40 cm in height, with slender, branched stems bearing foliage cut into deep lobes, of a bright and fresh green. The lightness of the whole gives the plant an airy, almost ethereal appearance.

The flowers, with five well-spaced petals, are a pale lilac pink to almost white, crossed by more pronounced pink-violet veins that give them a characteristic graphic elegance. It is precisely this network of dark veins on a light background that immediately distinguishes this species in the genus.

In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from May to July. In cultivation, it can last longer depending on exposure and conditions.

It adapts to ordinary, well-drained soil, in sunny to semi-shaded situations. It readily reseeds itself and can thus naturalize discreetly among other rock garden or edge plants. Hardy and undemanding, it is suitable for both rock gardens and natural-style compositions.
