Digitalis viridiflora

Perennial of the Plantaginaceae family, native to the Balkans — mainly Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, and northern Greece — where it grows in forest edges, clearings, grassy slopes, and scrub, on various substrates, between about 200 and 1,200 meters altitude.

It forms upright and slender stems 60 to 90 cm tall, well-leaved, with lanceolate leaves, glabrous to slightly pubescent, a bright and shiny green. The entire plant is remarkably green, including the flowering spikes, which gives it its specific epithet.

The tubular flowers, small and numerous, are arranged in slender and elongated spikes, loosely adorned. Their color is unique among cultivated foxgloves: yellow-greenish to pale green, sometimes slightly creamy, with the throat finely reticulated with reddish-brown veins. This almost monochrome vegetal hue with the foliage creates a very particular effect of transparency and lightness, very visible in semi-shade conditions.

In its natural habitat, flowering extends from June to August. In cultivation, it generally occurs from June to July.

It appreciates fresh, well-drained, humus-rich soil, in semi-shade or filtered sunlight. Hardier and more perennial than many foxgloves, it persists for several years in favorable conditions and self-seeds freely. To be combined with dark foliage to highlight its unique color palette.
