Dianthus spiculifolius is a perennial from the Caryophyllaceae family, native to the Carpathians and the Balkans, where it grows on rocky lawns, limestone screes, and grassy slopes at altitude, generally between 800 and 2,000 meters.
It forms upright and dense clumps, reaching 20 to 35 cm in height, with very fine linear foliage, dark green, reminiscent in its fineness of grasses, as suggested by its epithet spiculifolius, with spike-like leaves. The floral stems are slender, bearing elongated calyxes with scales tinged with deep brown-purple, an ornamental detail in its own right.
The flowers are pure white, with five petals very deeply and finely fringed, almost laciniated, giving them a unique airy and cobweb-like appearance in the genus. The flowering is abundant and dense. In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to August.
In cultivation, it requires well-drained soil, preferably limestone, in full sun. Hardy and undemanding once established, it is perfectly suited to rock gardens and walls, where the lightness of its very cut white flowers creates a vegetal lace effect that is hard to match in this genus.
