Dianthus deltoides 'Rose'

Perennial of the Caryophyllaceae family, Dianthus deltoides is native to Europe, from the British Isles to western Russia, where it colonizes dry lawns, sunny slopes, and lean meadows on well-drained, acidic to neutral substrates, up to about 2,000 meters in mountainous regions.

This cultivar forms a remarkably dense and rounded cushion, 15 to 25 cm in height when in bloom, with finely linear, medium green, tight and evergreen foliage. The slender, upright flowering stems bear elongated reddish buds before anthesis, then solitary flowers with distinctly notched petals of a bright and sustained magenta-pink, significantly more intense than the wild form. In full bloom, they almost entirely cover the foliage.

In its natural habitat, the species blooms from June to September. In cultivation, this cultivar blooms abundantly from June to August, with a possible resurgence after light pruning.

It thrives in well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil, in full sun exposure. Robust and easy, it is suitable for rock gardens, dry borders, and sunny slopes.
