Delosperma basuticum

Delosperma basuticum in bloom on rocky outcrops of the Lesotho mountains
Delosperma basuticum

Succulent perennial of the Aizoaceae family, native to the highlands of Lesotho and adjacent mountainous areas of South Africa, where it grows on rocky grounds and outcrops between 2,000 and 3,000 meters altitude. This high mountain origin makes it one of the hardiest species of the genus.

It forms a very low and tight carpet, rarely beyond 5 cm in height, with densely branched prostrate stems. The leaves are fleshy, short, triangular in section, bright green, dotted with translucent papillae that sparkle in the light.

The flowers, borne individually on short stems, are bright yellow. Numerous and dense, they almost completely cover the foliage in full bloom. In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from November to January. In cultivation in the northern hemisphere, it blooms from May to July.

In cultivation, it requires a very well-drained, mineral and poor soil, full sun exposure, and good winter dryness. It withstands significantly negative temperatures when conditions are dry. Ideal for rock gardens, paving interstices, and gravel gardens.
