Degenia velebitica

Degenia velebitica in bloom on limestone scree of the Velebit massifs in Croatia
Degenia velebitica

Perennial of the Brassicaceae family, strictly endemic to Croatia, where it is confined to the limestone massifs of the Velebit and some neighboring karstic reliefs. It colonizes cliffs, rocky ledges, and exposed scree, between approximately 500 and 1,700 meters of altitude.

It forms small, dense, compact cushions, 5 to 15 cm in height, consisting of rosettes of narrow leaves, covered with a silvery tomentum that gives them an almost white appearance under low-angle light. This felting protects the plant from water loss in an environment battered by winds and subject to intense temperature fluctuations.

The flowers, bright and vivid yellow, with four petals characteristic of the Brassicaceae, are grouped in short, dense clusters that emerge at the edge of the cushion. In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from March to May depending on the altitude. In cultivation, it generally blooms in April.

It is listed on the red list of threatened species due to its extremely restricted distribution area.

In cultivation, it requires perfect drainage, a lean limestone substrate, full sun exposure, and protection against stagnant winter moisture. It is suitable for elevated rockeries and well-maintained alpine gardens.
