Convolvulus cneorum

Convolvulus cneorum in bloom on the calcareous screes of the Mediterranean coast
Convolvulus cneorum

Subshrub perennial of the Convolvulaceae family, native to the cliffs and calcareous screes of the central and eastern Mediterranean coast, from Italy to Dalmatia. It grows in pronounced drought conditions, on poor and very well-drained soils, in full light.

It forms a dense and rounded shrub, 30 to 60 cm in height, with stems branching from the base. Its narrowly lanceolate foliage, covered with a silky silvery and shiny pubescence, gives it a metallic sheen in the light, maintained all year round. It is one of the most remarkable silvery foliages among Mediterranean rock garden shrubs.

The funnel-shaped flowers, pure white, slightly pink in bud, with a pale yellow center, follow one another abundantly on the terminal cymes. In its natural habitat, flowering extends from May to July. In cultivation, it can continue until September depending on exposure.

It requires perfect drainage, a stony and poor soil, in full sun. In a dry and well-drained soil, it can withstand frosts down to -10°C. In moist soil in winter, it is significantly more sensitive to cold. Particularly suitable for dry rock gardens and seaside gardens.
