Colchicum x 'lilac wonder'

Bulbous perennial of the Colchicaceae family, this cultivar is a horticultural hybrid whose exact origins remain uncertain, probably resulting from crosses involving species from the eastern Mediterranean basin and Asia Minor. It has established itself in temperate gardens as one of the most cultivated autumn colchicums, appreciated for the regularity and generosity of its flowering.

The flowers, medium to large in size, feature narrow and elongated tepals, a bright pinkish lilac with slightly mauve reflections, marked at the base with a whitish area that lightens the overall flower. This slender shape of the tepals, narrower than in Colchicum speciosum, gives it a more graceful and airy silhouette, almost star-like when viewed from the front. Each corm produces several successive flowers, ensuring a prolonged effect in the garden. The broad and shiny foliage appears in spring and discreetly disappears before summer.

In its natural habitat, the notion does not apply to this horticultural origin cultivar. In cultivation, flowering occurs from September to October. Like the entire genus, the plant is toxic in all its parts.

It thrives in any well-drained soil, in sun or light partial shade, and readily naturalizes in lawns or under trees with light foliage. Its cold resistance and ease of cultivation make it a particularly accessible choice for starting with colchicums.
