Campanula raddeana 'Alba'

(Campanula kemularia 'Alba')

Horticultural form with white flowers of Campanula raddeana, a perennial from the Campanulaceae family. The type species is native to the Caucasus, where it inhabits rock crevices, rocky slopes, and shaded edges of mountain forests, generally between 800 and 2,000 meters in altitude.

It forms upright to slightly arched clumps, 20 to 40 cm in height, from stoloniferous rhizomes that allow it to gradually spread. The foliage is glossy dark green, composed of heart-shaped, finely toothed leaves, pleasing to the eye even outside of flowering, with a slightly leathery texture that gives it a notable vegetative presence.

The flowers of this cultivar are pure white, elongated and pendulous bell-shaped, with slightly reflexed lobes, arranged in unilateral clusters along the stems. In the type species, the flowers are dark violet to purple; the 'Alba' selection offers a striking contrast with the dark foliage, of very particular elegance.

In its natural habitat, the flowering of the type species extends from July to September. In cultivation, this cultivar generally blooms from June to August.

It appreciates a cool, well-drained, humus-rich soil, in partial shade or light shade. Suitable for shaded rock gardens, north-facing walls, and woodland compositions where it brings a luminous and refined note.
