Perennial of the Campanulaceae family, native to the western Caucasus, where it grows in rock crevices, scree, and high-altitude alpine meadows, beyond 2,000 meters.
It forms slightly tufted clumps, completely glabrous, 10 to 25 cm in height. The basal leaves are long-petioled, cordate-oval to lanceolate, irregularly crenate-toothed, a bright and shiny green; the cauline leaves are sessile and linear, much narrower.
The flowering stems are slender, bearing one to a few broadly tubular bell-shaped flowers, in a deep blue-violet to purple, with spreading and triangular calyx lobes. The vividness of the hue and the generosity of the flowering are the most immediately striking features of this species.
In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from July to August. In cultivation, it generally blooms from June to July.
It requires a neutral, very well-drained, and sufficiently rich soil, in full sun. It is suitable for rock gardens, cultivation on tufa, or in alpine troughs. Propagation is by seed after cold stratification, stem cuttings, or division in June.
