Azorella trifurcata 'Nana'

Azorella trifurcata Nana very compact and hemispherical dwarf cushion for alpine rock garden and trough
Azorella trifurcata 'Nana'

Dwarf cultivar selected from Azorella trifurcata, a perennial from the Apiaceae family native to the Andes of Chile and Argentina, where the type species occupies high-altitude grasslands and windy screes between approximately 1,500 and 3,500 meters.

'Nana' is distinguished from the type species by its reduced size and even slower growth, forming very compact and perfectly hemispherical cushions 5 to 10 cm in height and 15 to 20 cm in diameter in cultivation. The surface of the cushion is remarkably regular and tight, almost miniaturized compared to the parent species.

The foliage is identical in nature: small trilobed, leathery, and shiny leaves, bright green to yellowish-green, so densely interwoven that they give the cushion an almost mineral texture. The flowers, tiny and yellow-green, emerge at the surface of the dome without overflowing it.

In its natural habitat, the flowering of the type species extends from November to January in the southern hemisphere. In cultivation under our latitudes, it generally occurs in June-July.

Like the type species, 'Nana' requires perfect drainage, a poor and mineral soil, full sun exposure, and protection from winter moisture. Its reduced scale makes it an ideal choice for alpine troughs and compositions.
