Perennial from the Brassicaceae family, aubrieta originates from the eastern Mediterranean basin and the Middle East, from rocky and sunny regions ranging from the Balkans to Iran. The cultivated forms are garden hybrids resulting from crosses between several wild species, mainly Aubrieta deltoidea.
It forms a soft and spreading cushion, 10 to 15 cm in height with a width that can reach 40 to 50 cm. The evergreen foliage, composed of small oval to slightly toothed leaves, of medium green and finely pubescent, provides a discreet background that enhances the flowering.
The flowers, simple, with four well-opened petals, display an intense and deep blue-violet, among the most vivid shades that can be observed in the Aubrieta genus. Their clear and bright color remains remarkably stable in sunny exposure. The slightly lighter center creates a depth effect in each flower.
In its natural habitat, the flowering of the parent species extends from March to May. In cultivation, 'Royal Blue' generally blooms from April to May, with a possible partial rebloom in autumn if the plant is pruned after the first flowering.
It requires well-drained soil, poor to moderately rich, in full sun. Perfect for cascading over a wall, in a rock garden, or at the edge of slabs, it is also appreciated for attracting the first pollinators of spring.
