Asperula gussonii

Asperula gussonii dense and rounded cushion with small white flowers in limestone rock garden
Asperula gussonii

Perennial of the Rubiaceae family, Asperula gussonii is endemic to Sicily, where it is confined to limestone rock gardens and rock crevices of mountain summits, notably in the Madonie and the Nebrodi, between approximately 1,500 and 2,000 meters. It is one of the botanical rarities of the Sicilian flora, highly coveted by alpine plant collectors.

It forms a very dense, tight, and regularly rounded cushion, 3 to 8 cm in height, with intertwined thin stems bearing small mucronate linear leaves, of a bright and shiny green, arranged in compact whorls that give the plant a fine and prickly texture, almost mossy from a distance.

The flowers, tubular with four lobes, are pure white to slightly pink in bud, grouped in small tight terminal glomerules that emerge in numbers from the surface of the cushion. The pink buds contrasting with the immaculate white open flowers give the plant a particularly delicate charm. In its natural habitat, its flowering extends from June to July.

In cultivation, it requires a very well-drained, limestone substrate, a sunny exposure, and protection against excess winter moisture. It is ideally grown in an alpine pot or in a vertical rock garden crevice, where its compact cushion can develop without competition.
