Armeria maritima 'Rubrifolia'

A unique cultivar among horticultural thrifts, Armeria maritima 'Rubrifolia' stands out from all other representatives of the species with an immediately striking foliar character: its linear, evergreen leaves take on a pronounced reddish-brown to bronze-purple hue, giving the cushion a decorative presence independent of any flowering. This colorful foliage is stable and generally intensifies in full exposure and cool weather.

The tuft is dense, compact, 10 to 15 cm in height outside of flowering. The upright flower stems reach 20 to 25 cm and bear globular heads of bright pink to warm pink, whose tonic warmth is enhanced by the contrast with the dark foliage that carries them.

In its natural habitat, the type species blooms from April to July. In cultivation, 'Rubrifolia' blooms from May to July, with a good hold of the stems.

It requires full sun and well-drained soil, poor to moderately fertile, without waterlogging in winter. It is in very sunny rock gardens and gravel gardens that this cultivar best expresses the originality of its foliage, offering a permanent colored texture that few other rock garden plants can match over such a long season.
