Armeria juniperifolia 'Drake's Deep Form'

A rare cultivar of Armeria juniperifolia, selected and distributed in British alpine horticultural circles, this clone is distinguished above all by the exceptional intensity of its flower color, particularly strong among the cultivated forms of the species.

It forms a dense and compact, hemispherical cushion, 5 to 10 cm in height, with evergreen foliage of short, rigid, and prickly leaves, a dark glaucous green characteristic of the species. The very short flower stems bear globular heads of deep pink-carmine, almost magenta, with a saturation rarely achieved in the Armeria genus at this miniature scale. The scarious bracts surrounding each head are pinkish-brown, further enhancing the impression of the rich color of the inflorescence.

In its natural habitat, the flowering of the type species extends from April to June depending on altitude. In cultivation, this cultivar blooms in April-May, and the depth of its color is particularly visible in slightly overcast weather, when the intense pinks stand out better than under harsh light.

Like all representatives of the species, it requires full sun, a poor and mineral, well-drained substrate, neutral to slightly acidic, and does not tolerate any stagnant moisture in winter. It finds its best expression in troughs and miniature alpine rock gardens, where the density of its color constitutes an immediate focal point.
