Anemone coronaria 'blue'

Crown anemone, florist's anemone. A quintessential Mediterranean species, widespread from the Mediterranean basin to Central Asia, growing in garrigues, fields, and stony slopes at low and medium altitudes. Hard and irregular tuber. Basal leaves divided into finely divided segments, almost parsley-like. Stems 20 to 40 cm bearing a large solitary flower with wide silky tepals — generally 5 to 8 —, surrounding a heart of dark stamens and a very decorative ring of black or colored stamens. One of the most cultivated bulbous plants since the Renaissance, having given rise to countless cultivars and horticultural groups, notably the De Caen and Saint-Bridgid groups.

Anemone coronaria « blue » — The forms with blue, blue-mauve to intense blue-violet flowers are among the most sought after in the genus. Blue, rare in nature for large spring flowers, takes on a particularly striking intensity and depth here, enhanced by the dark heart. These forms generally belong to the De Caen group, with single flowers.

Flowering from March to May depending on the planting date.
