Androsace vitaliana ssp cinerea

Androsace vitaliana ssp cinerea, alpine plant in ash-gray cushion with yellow flowers in rock garden
Androsace vitaliana ssp cinerea

Subspecies distinguished from the type by a denser and tighter foliar felt, giving the cushions a characteristic ash-gray hue — hence the name cinerea , « ashen ».

The rosettes are generally smaller and more compact than in the type, forming particularly dense cushions. The flowers retain the bright yellow characteristic of the species.

More restricted distribution area, centered on certain massifs of the Western Alps and the Pyrenees, on siliceous substrates.

Highly appreciated in cultivation for its silvery appearance contrasting with the vividness of its yellow flowers.
