Androsace cylindrica ssp hirtella (hybrid)

This subspecies, sometimes treated as a separate species under the name Androsace hirtella Dufour, is also a Pyrenean endemic, found in the same limestone rock crevices as the type subspecies, but with a slightly different geographical distribution, centered on the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees. It is distinguished by its looser rosettes, longer leaves more distinctly bristled with stiff hairs, and flowers generally of a deeper pink.

Hybrids from this subspecies, often obtained by crossing with other Pyrenean or alpine androsaces in specialized collections, tend to exhibit an intermediate habit, more vigorous cushions than the pure parents, and a generous pink bloom. They often inherit the characteristic silvery tomentum of the parents, giving the cushions a very decorative silvery-gray appearance between blooms.

The cultivation conditions are identical to those of the previous species: very well-drained and limestone substrate, winter protection against moisture under glass or polycarbonate, full sun, moderate watering. Propagation is done by cuttings of individual rosettes taken after flowering, inserted into pure sandy substrate under a slightly humid atmosphere.
