Aurinia saxatilis

syn. Alyssum saxatilis

Alyssum saxatile — See Aurinia saxatilis — This species, long classified under the name Alyssum saxatile and still frequently marketed under this old name, has been transferred to the genus Aurinia based on morphological and molecular characteristics. It is treated as a distinct species under the heading Aurinia saxatilis .

Aurinia saxatilis is the most cultivated and well-known of all plants commonly called alyssum: a robust perennial forming large grayish clumps 20-30 cm high, covered in April-May with a particularly spectacular mass of golden yellow flowers.

Native to the limestone rocks and cliffs of Southern and Central Europe, it is essential in rock gardens, on walls, and along slab borders, in full sun and on any well-drained substrate. Many cultivars exist, with pale lemon yellow, orange-yellow, or cream flowers.
