Allium roseum

Allium roseum Mediterranean garlic with pink flowers in loose umbels with bulbils in dry soil
Allium roseum

Bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin, from the Iberian Peninsula to the Middle East, where it grows in scrublands, dry lawns, and cultivated fields, on well-drained calcareous soils.

It produces in May-June loose and graceful umbels of pale pink to deep pink, star-shaped flowers, borne on stems 20-40 cm tall. The umbel can mix fertile flowers and aerial bulbils, giving it a characteristic composite appearance. The leaves are flat, narrow, bright green, with a slight garlic scent.

Easy and prolific, it naturalizes easily in Mediterranean gardens or in any warm and draining situation. However, it can become invasive through the multiplication of its bulbils. A light border plant, for slopes or dry meadows, it is suitable for both natural-style gardens and associations with Mediterranean perennials.
