Alchemilla faeroensis var pumila

Perennial of the Rosaceae family, this variety is a dwarf and compact form endemic or quasi-endemic to the Faroe Islands, where it grows in short grasslands, humid heaths, and rocky areas swept by the oceanic wind, in conditions of high atmospheric humidity and acidic soils.

It forms very low cushions, only a few centimeters high, with lobed kidney-shaped leaves, characteristic of the genus, but reduced to a miniature size. As with most lady's mantles, the leaves retain water droplets in small beads on their surface, a particularly marked effect on this compact habit. The flowers are yellow-green, discreet, typical of the genus.

A plant of a very specialized ecological niche, A. faeroensis var. pumila is rarely encountered in cultivation; it mainly interests collectors of alpine plants and enthusiasts of Atlantic island floras. It requires in cultivation a fresh to moist, acidic, well-aerated soil, and a non-drying atmosphere.
