Aethionema saxatile

Aethionema saxatile Mediterranean rock garden plant with pink flowers growing between stones
Aethionema saxatile

Species with a wide Mediterranean and Middle Eastern distribution, naturally established on limestone rocks, scree, and dry grasslands of the Mediterranean basin up to the Caucasus.

It forms a low and spreading sub-shrub of 10 to 20 cm, with flexible stems that insinuate between stones and embrace the relief of the rock garden, bearing narrow, glaucous foliage of a discreet blue-green.

The flowering, from May to July, produces numerous clusters of small bright pink to pale pink flowers, with rounded petals contrasting with yellow stamens, which literally cover the plant and illuminate the cracks and walls where it likes to settle.

It self-seeds spontaneously in the crevices, naturally colonizing the spaces between slabs or dry stones, and its generous flowering makes it a valuable element of rock gardens and dry gardens, despite its usual discretion in catalogs.
