Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arendsii'

Perennial from the Ranunculaceae family, this cultivar is selected from Aconitum carmichaelii , a species native to central and eastern China, where it grows in moist meadows, forest edges, and stream banks in mountainous areas.

It forms upright and vigorous clumps, reaching 120 to 150 cm in height, with deeply cut palmate foliage, dark green and shiny, which remains decorative from emergence until the first frosts. The stems are robust and generally stiff enough to do without staking.

The flowers are gathered in dense and slender terminal spikes, characteristic of the genus: each flower features the typical arched helmet of aconites, here in a deep and intense blue-violet, particularly bright in autumn. It is precisely its late flowering, from September to October, that constitutes the main quality of this cultivar, bringing a rare blue color to a season when the garden's palette is reduced.

It is cultivated in partial shade to light shade, on fresh, deep soil rich in humus, without summer drying. It also tolerates full sun if the soil remains constantly fresh. Like all aconites, the entire plant is highly toxic if ingested, which requires handling precautions.

It is suitable for shaded borders, water feature edges, and autumn compositions of great effect.
